Description:  The Washington Union Station serves the US capital with long distance and commuter trains, and it is also a major commercial center.
 
History:  The station was completed in 1907 as a joint project of the Pennsylvania and the Baltimorre and Ohio railroads. It declined in the 60's along with general passenger train usage, and it fell into disrepair. It was closed from 1981 to 1988, undergoing a major restoration. With the renaissance of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor passenger service, the station has again become a major operation, and Amtrak plans to continue to invest in it.
