Description:  A recreational plaza in the downtown area of the city, built around the historic mission, which serves as a Catholic church.
 
Anchor:  San Luis Obispo Mission
 
History:  The San Luis Obispo De Tolosa Mission was founded by Spanish missionary Junipero Serra in 1772. The ruined mission was restored in 1933, and the mission plaza was developed by the city in 1970.
 
Public Art:  There is a fountain with sculptures depicting bears, the state animal of California.
 
Events:  Concerts in the Plaza, Children's Day.
 
Seating:  Benches, steps and ledges around the fountain.
 
Landscaping:  The plaza has been extensively landscaped using California native trees such as California Sycamore. There are gardens inside the mission.
