Piazza della Signoria
Location:  Florence, Italy
Description:  This plaza is the center of political and cultural life of Florence. It takes its name from the Signoria which was the ruling concil of medieval and renaissance Florence. It includes the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizzi and Lanzi art galleries and other important palaces and historic buildings.

History:  There has been a central square at this location since Roman times. It started taking its current shape around 1268 and it was paved for the first time in 1385.
Public Art:  The Loggia dei Lanzi is a portal facing the Piazza that provides an open-air scupture gallery with bronze and marble works. There are also other statues around the Piazza, including a copy of Michelangelo's David and an equestrina statue of Duke Cosimo I Medici.
