Ghirardelli Square
Location:  San Francisco, California, USA
Description:  A commercial/historic plaza with shops and restaurants in the Fisherman's Wharf district. This district originated as a base for the city's fishing fleet. It still serves this prupose, along with being a tourist attraction.
Anchor:  Old Ghirardelli chocolate factory
History:  In 1893, this area was the headquarters of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, which moved away its headquarters in the 1960's. In 1964 the square was converted into a restaurant and retail complex. The original Ghirardelli building was registered as a Historic Place in 1982.
Commercial Spots:  Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop, Wattle Creek Winery.
Public Art:  There is a fountain with sculptures depicting a mermaid, executed in bronze by Ruth Asawa in 1968.
Events:  Chocolate Festival, Wine Festival, Kids Bash.
Seating:  Benches, steps and ledges around fountain.
